Mood Board | A Neutral Master Bedroom

I want a neutral master bedroom. It’s the only real adult space in our house, and with a toddler and one on the way, I need somewhere that’s a bit of a retreat. Somewhere to chill.

I’ve pulled together a neutral bedroom mood board (at the bottom of the post), with an emphasis on subtle pattern and layers of texture. While nothing is going to come from this in the near future, I do have plans for when we next move. In fact, I’ve just created a new Pinterest board dedicated solely to Pretty Bedrooms… have a gander.

It’s not that I don’t like our master bedroom as it is. I do. I just don’t love it. Mainly because of things that cannot, at present, be changed. For example: I love our bedroom furniture set, but if I had to choose it again, I definitely wouldn’t have gone matchy-matchy. Want to see what I’m on about?

We’re thinking about selling our King size bed in favor of a Queen and possibly the night stands too. They’re lovely, but very large, and again there’s that whole matchy-matchy thing that I don’t love going on.

There do remain a few elements of this space that I still love though. One is the striped wall behind the bed.

Another is the lamps, in all their shiny loveliness. Actually, I love the lamps so much, I made them the jumping off point for a new mood board. I also looked over all the bedrooms I love on Pinterest and a lot of the ones I was really drawn to for a master had neutral colour palettes. So this is what I came up with…

Neutral Master Bedroom Mood Board

I kind of love it. Actually, scratch “kind of.” It’s calm, but with lots of pattern so it’s not boring. One tip for mixing multiple patterns in one space is to vary the scale, so they don’t compete. (I wouldn’t actually use both the floral prints on the mood board together, for example – they’re just both on there because I like them both!)

There are my lovely lamps and the dresser we already have, and the mirror is one I’m stealing from the living room.

I love the two side tables pictured. They’re inspiration more than anything – I’m thinking I could thrift similar pieces for less. And that chair. Fancy.

Fabrics – Laura Ashley (Nina Floral/Cottonwood/Erin Floral) and P Kaufman (Cross Section Charcoal)
Wooden Side Table – Oka
Metal Side Table – Crate & Barrel
Rose Pillow – West Elm
Gold Pillow – Urban Outfitters
Round Mirror – Z Gallerie
Lamps – Pier 1
Chair – similar at World Market
Dresser – Pottery Barn

I really like the neutral color palette and patterns. I went bright in our master bedroom and now I'm regretting it. The room is on the list to get redone, but it'll be a while!
