ORC Week 5 | DIY | Mid-century Bedside Tables

Good news, everyone: I finally got the wood for my live-edge desk! It’s definitely been the biggest hassle of this whole One Room Challenge master bedroom makeover, but it’s going to be worth it. I’ve still got to sand and finish it, but there is at least a chance now that I will finish on time! I also finished the mid-century bedside tables this week, although one is still drying as I type!

This pair of little mid-century bedside tables were an Etsy find. The seller listed them as teak, but they weren’t expensive, so I wasn’t surprised to find out they were actually largely particle board. That was actually a good thing for me, because I was after a two-toned look and it meant I didn’t feel bad about painting them.

Mid-Century Night Stands Before

I know the blogosphere doesn’t need another lengthy tutorial on how to paint wooden furniture, so I’ll keep this brief.

Step One: Clean and Sand

First up, I took the drawers out and gave everything a good clean.

Lightly Sanded bedside tables

I used painter’s tape to mark off the parts I wanted to paint, then lightly sanded those areas.

Step Two: Prime

The cabinets each got a coat of Zinsser Cover Stain, applied with a brush for the edges and a mini roller for everywhere else.

Step Three: Paint

That was followed by two coats of paint. I used Dulux Grey Steel 2 in an Eggshell finish, because I wanted a little bit of a sheen.

Peeling off that painter’s tape was so satisfying!

Check out how clean those lines are! I’ve never painted furniture before, but I’m quite impressed with myself!

DIY Refinished Mid-Century Night Stands Before & After-2

To-Do List

Speaking of which, this is what’s left. Anything that’s in progress but not done yet is italicised.

– Clean/declutter
– Decide on art

– Hang mirror on landing
– Desk lamp
– Pendant shade

– Print/hang art
– Refinish mid-century night stands
– Hang mirror
– Hang something over headboard
– Decide on/arrange plants
– Pillow for bed
– Pillow for rattan chair
– Live edge desk
– Desk chair
– Bedside lamp shades
– Cabinet knobs?

The list is looking a lot better than it did last week, but I’m still in panic mode – one more week till the big reveal!

    Love those nightstands!!!
I am still desperately looking for a lovely bedside table for my bedroom but a "kid friendly" one, because my little one is now running around everywhere so I have to choose something with round corners I think… A bit hard to find something beautiful and safe 🙁
Anyway, love yours! Perfect midcentury touch 😉

Hi Lizzie. What a lucky find! Those are absolutely gorgeous. I just mentioned to my husband I had no idea you could buy furniture on Etsy. I love the way you painted them as well. You softened the look and it goes beautifully with your padded headboard.

So glad you think so – I didn't want to go too far with the paint and totally change them. Thanks AnnMarie!
