A Small Space Outdoor Oasis: Plans for the Balcony

I’m ignoring the fact that, as I type, it is snowing outside. Instead, I am focusing on the fact that it is almost half way through March and, therefore, the weather has to get nicer soon. Right?!

We use our little balcony a lot in summer – the kiddos can spend hours playing with their water table and I love to sit out there with a good book and a cool drink. That said, we really haven’t made the most of it for the past couple of years. We sold our wooden dining set last Spring (to a lovely girl – also a Chicago-based Brit named Lizzie – too funny) and bought a colorful outdoor rug. We were all set to buy some comfy seating and finish the space off, but then we ended up sitting on camping chairs for the rest of summer instead.

There were a couple of reasons: first, we missed the sales and couldn’t bring ourselves to pay full price for furniture, and second, because it was really hard to find a cute, small, comfy, affordable outdoor sofa. Fortunately, Target has a few pretty pint-sized options this year.

1. Auto-Tilt Umbrella – Home Decorators // 2. Flower Boxes – Ikea // 3. Sofa – Target
4. Outdoor Pillows – Target // 5. Outdoor Rug – Home Decorators
6. Stackable Kids’ Chairs – Target // 7. Ceramic Garden Stool – Overstock

We already have the rug and the flower boxes, so I think the total cost of this little makeover should be under $1000 including flowers. Not cheap, but worth the investment I think; now we’ll finally be able to make the most of our little urban oasis.
